Space-Saving Sliding Door Cabinets – Functionality and Challenges

Sliding door cabinets are a highly space-efficient storage solution. The doors slide sideways to provide access to the cabinet interior. Unlike hinged doors or drawers that open outward, sliding doors never extend beyond the cabinet’s footprint. This makes them a preferred choice in high-density office environments or wherever space is limited.

However, securing such cabinets poses specific challenges. Sliding doors run on parallel tracks, with one door positioned behind the other. A sliding door lock must prevent the doors from moving sideways. The original solution was the push-lock, installed in the front door. When locked, it extends a bolt to block the rear door. However, this solution often proved insufficient. Many sliding doors operate on plastic gliders and are made from thinner materials to allow smooth movement—especially in taller units. As a result, these lighter doors can often be forced apart, allowing unauthorized access to the cabinet contents.
